The Little Girl who Stuck Things in her Ear

September 3, 2010

About a month ago my lovely daughter Athena stuck a popcorn kernel in her ear. She had not told anyone until later that night when her daddy went to clean her ears. Daddy took a peek and could see it and tried to rescue the little kernel himself. After a few attempts, he feared that he would only make it worse if he were to escalate his attempts.

So I grabbed some pants that were not made of flannel or featured Homer Simpsons as my current pair did, and took her to the Urgent Care. They tried everything they good to get the kernel out, but nothing worked and we were referred to an ENT office.

Of course she managed to do this on a Friday night so we got to listen to her complain about the kernel until Monday when we realized that we needed a referral from our pediatrician. That phone call was made and an appointment was set two weeks away at a facility 45 minutes away.

Two weeks of complaining, tears, and mild pain passed.

The PA at the ENT office was not even allowed to look in her ear. I tried to hold her down but ended up with a bruised foot and chipped tooth.

An appointment for sedation was made…for two weeks later.

So today my husband I drove 40 minutes to the surgery center to have Athena put under mild anesthesia so the surgeon could remove the popcorn kernel.

Athena in her gown, ready for the skittles scented anesthesia.

Within a few minutes of us returning to the waiting room we were presented with this:

That is a massive foreign object!

When she woke up from the procedure she was full of smiles and giggles. She wanted me to take a picture and scrapbook it for her. Silly girl.

She is feeling great and is currently upstairs playing with her Littlest Pet Shop toys and wondering if she can have homemade vanilla ice cream for dessert.

Friday Fill In

September 3, 2010

1. Family is family and no matter who you choose to be in yours, family is all important.

2. When playing with toys, my children tend to goback and forth. And nothing gets put away in between. Ever. That would be too much work to put away the Zhu Zhu pets for 10 minutes while they play with the Kinex blocks. My work is never done.

3. I love a nice cool, late, morning snuggling under my down comforter with my kiddos. There is a lot of giggling and wiggling, and occasionally the accidental kick the face, but it is my idea of the perfect way to wake up.

4. Having the whole family help prepare the food and table makes a good meal.

5. I’ve got the urge to right “funk” in this space. Seriously though, I’ve got the
messiest closet in the world right now. There is a mix of paperwork, shoes, jewelry, computer parts, and the occasional piece of lingerie strewn about in there. I think there is a chocolate Easter Bunny on the top shelf as well. I should be cleaning it out, but nope. I am playing Friday Fill In instead 😉
6. OMGWTFBBQ!: wth!!!

7. And as for the weekend, tonight I’m looking forward to a little bit rest and some family time, tomorrow my plans include sleeping in and possibly a hike with the kiddos and Sunday, I want to visit a friend of mine at her craft fair and let the kiddos run around the shaded greenery there.

Friday 5 – INK

September 3, 2010

Five random questions from Be sure to check out some of the other great answers!

1. What are the coolest and ugliest tattoos you’ve ever seen? The coolest tattoos that I have seen are usually full pieces like a sleeve or full back piece. I saw a really beautiful tree of life sleeve tattoo on a girl in my yoga class. I was admiring the work and then realized that might think I was admiring something else…hmmmm. Hopefully she saw my ink and realized it was an admiration of art. The ugliest tattoo I have ever seen was someone with a sailor style heart with a banner that read the F word. It was just below his belly button and just looked ridiculous. I try not to bash on people’s tattoos as they usually hold some meaning, or at least a memory for them. I like to think that everyone has their artwork permanently inked into their flesh for a reason so though I may roll my eyes at the soroity sisters with matching Tweety birds, I try not to bash them. The dude with heart? That was ugly.
2. Have you ever had a meal in which squid ink was an ingredient? How was it? I have not but would not be opposed to trying it. A competitor on Cupcake Wars used squid ink in a cupcake and the judges LOVED it!
3. Are you one of those people who has a favorite pen, or one of those people who just uses whatever’s at hand? What’re your favorite pens like? I tend to use whichever pen the 2 year old has not lost. My favorites are the RSVP pens, but only when the lid is on the back of them.
4. There’s a box of colored markers on the table, and someone tells everyone assembled to grab one. If you have first pick, what do you take? The black one. Maybe the magenta (or pink one), but my first grab would be for the black one.
5. Have you ever written on a wall in a public place? Many times has Sharpie graced the walls of various dance clubs with my autograph. Not that I am proud of this, just stating facts.

Works for Me Wednesday – “Green Picnics”

September 1, 2010

Today’s Works for Me Wednesday was inspired by fellow blogger Big Binder . She posted a wonderful Top Ten Tuesday about what to bring on a picnic. I love picnics. LOVE LOVE LOVE them.

A few years ago when the idea of “being green” started getting really big I was already using vinegar cleaning supplies, cloth diapering, and using reuseable sandwich bags and wraps. One day we were packing up for a picnic and I had already put a bunch of cut up fruit into a Tupperware container and packed the paper plates. It crossed my mind that I try so hard in other situations to reduce my waste, why not on a picnic?

It seems like an easy concept, but it takes some prep and not a lot of people, including myself at the time, know much about it. So by trial and error, we have perfected the “greenest picnic” that we can.

First, use smaller containers to load up your food. That way everyone can eat directly out of their containers if you don’t want to pack up a bunch of dishes. Bento Boxes are great for this. Wrap snacks and sandwiches in reuseable and waterproof wraps and bags. You can find these on Etsy but my favorites come from MamaMade or the ones I made myself. Make sure you pack all your plastic and non breakable dishes, your utensils, and your cloth napkins.

Now you are going to need three bags. 2 will need to be “wet bags” than go into the washer and dryer. Once again, check Etsy or purchase yourself some PUL and cotton and make your own. The third bag will be a small plastic trash bag if you are going somewhere that doesn’t have a public trashcan. Place all your dishes and utensils in the first wet bag. Place all your sandiwch bags and cloth napkins in the second bag. Then, place all your trash in the trash bag.

When you get home, fill your sink with soapy water and place the contents of the first bag into the water. Then throw that bag along with the second bag and its contents into the washer and start it up. Don’t forget to throw your picnic blanket in there too.

And viola. With little more work than a dinner at home, you can have a picnic in the great outdoors without worrying about damaging the nature that you so love.

This is what works for me! Check out the other Works for ME Wednesday participants and enter to win a really cool Dayspring’s school supplies pack!

Top Ten Tuesday – Pictures of Summer

August 31, 2010

It’s a little late today. We had a very long day filled with school, doctor appointments, and miscellaneous errands.
Top Ten {Tuesday}
Since Athena started kindergarten yesterday I have been forced to realize that summer is over. I wish I could say the same for the summer heat. That has stuck around a little too much for my tastes. With the summer being over, I would like to post my Top Ten Pictures of Summer for this week’s edition of Top Ten Tuesday. Be sure to check out all the other participants! Good stuff this week.

The littles are taking a stroll on my Grandpa’s property near the Ozarks in Arkansas. The land was sold during our stay there so this will be the last picture taken there.

Athena and the King in Memphis TN.

Alex had an amazing ride although I had a lot nail biting moments. The horse is not one that I would want to ride but my daughter is amazing with her.

My grandpa pushing the littles on the swing. This was such an amazing moment.

Athena in the lake. Seriously? I hate being fresh water like that and she was begging to just jump in.

My sister and Athena. They were getting along that day.

In front of the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo in Colorado Springs. I highly recommend this zoo. It was so amazing and even in the rain all day it was a real blast and there were so many cool exhibits and attractions.

Yee haw! Only, there isn’t a horse…
My husband is like a bird whisperer. Those little winged creatures love him. Within seconds of walking into the exhibit he had one on his head.

Me and the Littles. I love this picture. It is going to be framed on our wall soon.

I wish there were more pictures of Alex, but she had the busiest of schedules this summer and I rarely had the camera ready this summer. Most of my pics that aren’t on my phone are from vacation. In fact, my sister took a few of these. I need to get better about carrying the camera around and not just the phone. Maybe next Tuesday will be a Top Ten pics from the iPhone that I finally synced.

Thanks for stopping by! Leave me a comment and I will come visit you!

Bread and Butter

August 27, 2010

I forgot to stuff the butter before closing it. Whoops.

I really love felt food and this was a really fun set to make. The slices of bread were made to look as though they had been cut off the ends of the loaf. Love it!

Thursday Thirteen: Guilty Pleasure Television

August 26, 2010

Almost forgot about one of my favorite memes! Thursday Thirteen Check it out and join us.

My Top 13 Television Guilty Pleasures

1. LOST – I had never watched this show and with all the hoopla about the finale, I started watching from season 1 on Netflix.
2. One Tree Hill – I am not one for soap operas, and One Tree Hill boarders on that quiet a bit, but once Hubby got me hooked on it (yes you read that right) I haven’t been able to stop. I am watching Season 7 right now and it just doesn’t work without Lucas and Peyton. BORING>
3. Dexter – I started watching this to do some research for a swap partner on Craftster and got hooked. I love it.
4. Dollhouse – only watched Season 1, but I am hooked. I love Eliza Dushka which is the only reason I started watching, and she is amazing in this show. The season finale ticked me off a little, but I am waiting for Netflix to get Season 2.
5. America’s Got Talent – I can’t help it. I love to watch. There is something about everyday people who are “nobody” getting a chance to shine and show their talent on television. I also have a new “celeb” crush in Dan Speary. He has totally been bumped to #2 on my “freebie list”. I also would pay a butt ton of money to go see Prince Poppycock in Vegas. LOVE him.
6. Firefely – Okay, I have finished the entire season (and the movie) but I always said how uninterested I was in this whole phenomenon and I didn’t want to watch it. I was going to go to my grave not watching it or Star Wars. (start throwing things at me now he he) so of course I watched part of it while my husband was and there you go. I am a fan.
7. On the Road with Austin and Santino – I am a Project Runway Fan and always will be. These two characters crack me up and make some beautiful fashion. It is great TV and great fun to watch gay “city” men ride donkeys in the country wearing $800 boots. Just awesome.
8. Royal Pains – not sure why I love this show so much, but I do. Hank Lawson is HOT!
9. GLEE – I started watching it and thought “oh man, this is so stupid” but I kept watching…and couldn’t stop. Now I am jumping up and down like a school girl in front of the ice cream truck waiting for the next season.
10. Next Food Network Star – I want to be the Next Food Network Star so I am all about this show.
11. Cupcake Wars – Reality TV mixed with my all time favorite sweet. Need I say more?
12. Make It or Break It – I blame my 16 year old sister for this one. One episode and I was hooked. I hate that I watch it and rarely admit that I do, but I have to see this show.
13. Project Runway – Nothing Guilty here. I just LOVE this show. It inspires me to sew more and I just love it. I even watch some of the other countries version of this show.

A Bit Scrap Happy

August 25, 2010

A few months back I entered a few challenge contests on Cafe Mom’s scrapbooking groups. I didn’t win anything, but look at some of these amazing layouts I got finished. I did about 48 layouts total and am so pleased that I got a little more caught up. Here are a few of my favorites:
